As part of their ongoing commitment to reduce emissions from transport, the DFT have proposed that all sales of combustion engined motorcycles and scooters will be stopped by 2035. This is in line with their target to eliminate all sales of diesel and petrol vehicles by 2040. The DFT recognise that motorcycles and scooters are an important part of the UK’s transport mix, and that many riders rely on them for their daily commute. However, they believe that the switch to electric motorcycles and scooters will help to reduce emissions from transport, and contribute to their goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050. Transport minister Rachel Maclean said: “We know that transport is a major contributor to climate change and we must act now to end our contribution to this global problem. “These tough but necessary proposals will help us achieve our ambitious target of net zero emissions by 2050, while also supporting jobs and growth in the UK’s thriving economy.” The proposals have been welcomed by environmental groups, but some riders have expressed concerns about the costs of switching to electric bikes, and the availability of charging infrastructure. The DFT will consult on the proposals later this year, and we will keep you updated on the latest developments.
