Are motorcycles going to be banned
The news follows the already announced ban on new petrol and diesel cars and vans from 2030, and is part of the government’s aim to have net zero emissions by 2050. The plans are still in consultation, but if they go ahead, it would mean that only electric motorcycles and scooters would be able to be sold new in the UK from 2035 onwards.
There are a number of reasons for the proposed ban, but the main one is to help reduce emissions. Motorcycles and scooters account for around 2% of vehicles on UK roads, but they account for around 14% of emissions from road transport. This is because they tend to be used for shorter journeys, which means that they emit more pollution per mile than cars.
The other reason for the ban is to help improve air quality. Motorcycles and scooters tend to emit more pollutants than cars, and so banning them would help to improve air quality in cities and towns.
The government is consulting on the proposals until the end of March, and so it is not yet clear if they will go ahead. However, if they do, it would mean that the sale of new petrol motorcycles and scooters would be banned from 2035 onwards.
